Pumpkins and Squash

Today was a soup day. Wild rice, chicken, carrots, celery, and onions. Yum. I think we were starting to wind down today. It's been a busy week. The gardens are cleared out and plowed up for the year. I wish these pumpkins and squash with their beautiful colors could just last forever.

Indoor Days and Baking

It's been one of those cozy indoor days with drizzling rain. I had such a wanting to bake today so I made up some English Muffin Bread for toasting. It's a really yummy yeasty quick bread, great for a little snack or teatime with jam or cinnamon sugar.
English Muffin Bread
2 packages yeast
6 cups flour
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon soda
2 cups milk
1/2 cup water

Combine 3 cups flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and soda. Heat liquids until very warm. Add to dry mixture. Beat well. Stir in rest of flour. Spoon into 2 bread pans (greased and sprinkled with cornmeal). Cover, let rise in a warm place for 45 minutes. Bake at 400°for 25 minutes.

Fall Evening

We sat around a little fire tonight. It was chilly enough that we were too cold in back, too warm in front, but it was nice and there were lots of Canadian geese landing and honking. I love that. Simple pleasures.
